The first iteration of the Uber card was a pretty compelling option for people who wanted to earn good bonus rewards without paying an annual fee. The current version isn't particularly interesting. But, if you still have the card, you might as well use it for your Uber purchases and maybe your cell phone bill.

Collecting the Signup Bonus

This card is primarily interesting for its bonus category reward rates, not for its signup bonus. After subtracting the opportunity cost of using the card for $cash of spending, the calculated net value for the initial year is $100 (Expression error: Unrecognized word "cash". cents per dollar spent). It isn't very much, but it is better than nothing. After subtracting the opportunity cost of using the card for $500 of spending, the calculated net value of the sign-up is $90 (18 cents per dollar spent).

Notable Benefits

  • Free cell phone protection. If you use the card to pay for your cell phone bill, you'l get free cell phone protection for an unlimited number of lines on your account. This includes coverage for damage or theft, but not for lost phones. There is a $25 deductible and benefits are capped at $600 per incident and two incidents per year. Get Free Cell Protection from these Credit Cards.

The $50 credit for streaming services is not available with the refreshed version of the card.

Bonus Categories

  • There are better options for your restaurant, hotel, airfare, and home rental purchases. 3% cashback is better than what you would earn from a good general-purpose reward card, but you can earn even more valuable rewards with other cards. Best Credit Cards for Restaurant Spending. Best Credit Cards for Travel Spending.
  • The Uber card earns "Uber Cash", not real cash back. Before earning rewards with the card, make sure you spend enough on Uber to use your points. Since you'll be using points for some of your Uber spending, you'll make fewer purchases that will earn the card's 5% rate.
  • The better way to save money on your Uber spending is with discounted gift cards. You can often save more than the 5% you get from the card.
  • You don't want to use this card for your everyday spending. You'll earn higher rewards from a good general-purpose reward card. Get a Great General Purpose Reward Card and Use It for All of Your Spending.

Getting Rid of the Card

  • Make sure to cash out your rewards balance before you cancel your card.
  • You might be able to receive a retention offer to keep your card. It could be enough to make it worthwhile to keep the card.
